Hadith Explanation

Eesa Will Break The Cross

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Eesa (alaihis salam) will break the cross, kill the pigs, abolish the Jizyah and call the people to Islam. During his time, Allah will end every religion and sect other than Islam, and will destroy the Dajjal. Then peace and security will prevail on earth, so that lions will graze with camels, tigers with cattle, and wolves with sheep; children will be able to play with snakes without coming to any harm. Eesa (alaihis salam) will remain for forty years, then die, and the Muslims will pray for him.” [Musnad Ahmad]

This hadith tells us many things:

1) All the prophets called people to worship One God alone - our Creator, Sustainer, Owner and Cherisher. The prophets came with different Shariats - rules for living life, but all taught Tawheed – that Allah alone has the right to give us orders and tell us how to live. The last Shariat to be sent by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) is that of Islam.

Once Eesa (alaihis salam) is sent down to earth for his second stay, he will enjoin on people to follow the Shariat that Allah gave to His last Prophet, Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). Eesa (alaihis salam) will call the people to Islam.

2) While Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has allowed people to remain in disobedience to Him as non-Muslims, and live with security in the Islamic state while paying the tax known as Jizyah, He (subhana wa ta’ala) will not allow this to continue once Eesa (alaihis salam) is sent back to earth.

The people who claim to be Eesa (alaihis salam’s) followers will have to choose between following him in entirety or being killed by him. At that time Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) will not allow any religion other than Islam to be practiced. Thus, the Jizyah will be abolished.

3) Eesa (alaihis salam’s) mandate will include destroying the cross, and thereby putting an end to the belief that the Jews were successful in crucifying him. Eesa (alaihis salam) was neither put on the cross, nor was he killed. He was lifted from earth by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). When he returns he will complete the remainder of his earthly life-span.

4) In total, Eesa (alaihis salam) will live for forty years during his second stay on earth. This will include the period in which he will fight Dajjal and his followers, the period of Yajuj and Majuj, and the seven year period of peace.

5) Pigs will also be killed by Eesa (alaihis salam) as the people claiming to be his followers began to consume them though they were forbidden to do so.

6) The seven period of extraordinary peace will encompass all creatures and even normal predator-prey relations will be suspended, hence no creature will fear another.

7) On the natural death of Eesa (alaihis salam) after forty years, the Muslims will pray for him.
