Hadith Explanation
Seven Sins that Condemn to Hell
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Avoid the seven sins that will condemn the one who commits them to Hell.” The Sahabah asked, “What are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Associating anything in worship with Allah; magic and witchcraft; killing anyone whose killing Allah has forbidden except in the course of justice; consuming Riba; consuming the wealth of the orphan; running away from the battlefield; and slandering the reputation of innocent, chaste, believing women.” [Bukhari]
This hadith delineates seven enormous sins that place one in Jahannum:
1. Considering that anyone or anything has any of Allah’s attributes or powers; or is worthy of obedience more than Allah; or has the right to legislate contrary to Allah’s legislation.
2. Practicing magic or helping anyone else to practice it.
3. Killing anyone whose killing Allah has forbidden.
4. Charging Riba (money above the amount borrowed).
5. Taking anything unjustly from the property of orphans.
6. Running away from the battlefield. This also implies that not being in the battlefield, when Muslims need to be defended, is a greater crime.
7. Saying things about innocent Muslim women that harm their reputation.
Let us repent if we do any of these things; seek Allah’s forgiveness; and figure out how not to do these things in the future. Ameen.
