Hadith Explanation

A Ram for You and Me

“Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) sacrificed two rams of predominantly white colour, one for himself and the other for his Ummah (Community).” [Sahih Bukhari]

This hadith shows us Rasul Allah’s concern for each member of his Ummah. When he sought Allah’s Pleasure with his sacrifice, he wished for his Ummah to also receive Allah’s Pleasure, and so sacrificed a ram on their behalf too. Do we care about him as much as he cared about us?

There is also evidence in this hadith, that Hanafis and Hanbalis use to support their position, that a Muslim is entitled to donate the reward of any kind of worship he performs, to whomever he wishes, of the Muslim dead. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) offered a sacrifice of animals and donated the reward to his Ummah, which included both the living and the dead, both those who existed at his time and those who were to come later.
