Hadith Explanation

Delaying Repayment

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “For someone to put off repayment of a debt when able to pay is an injustice.” [Sahih Bukhari]

If you are unfortunate enough to have a debt on you, do repay it as soon as you are able. It is often a cause of bitterness among family when a loan is taken from a relative and the creditor sees the debtor spending money on unessential items but not repaying him/her. According to this hadith, you are listed among cruel people if you have the money to repay your creditor but choose to delay repayment.

Keep in mind that while it is obligatory to pay back your loan as soon as you can, it is Haraam (forbidden) for you to pay interest on it. If you take an interest bearing loan, you do a great injustice to yourself by inviting Allah’s wrath on you.
