Hadith Explanation

Disaffecting a Person’s Family

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “He who disaffects a person’s wife or servant from him is not of us.” [Abu Dawud]

It is unlawful (Haraam) for a person to mention anything to another’s servant, wife, son/daughter, and so forth that could disaffect them from him, unless one is commanding the right or forbidding the wrong.

Unfortunately, this vice is commonly indulged in, creating rifts between a wife and her husband, inciting her to be ungrateful towards him and neglect the responsibilities that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has blessed her with, through which she may reach her home in Jannah.

Nowadays, the media (newspapers, magazines, T.V.) and NGOs, all aspire to commit this very sin. Women’s rights groups and feminist movements have set their own standards of right and wrong, justice and injustice, ignoring the laws Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has laid down.

This situation is analogous to taking an exam in which you fail because you refuse to consult the text book given to you to prepare for the exam. For the exam of life, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) gave us a teacher in the form of Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), and a textbook and syllabus in the form of the Quran. He (subhana wa ta’ala) also told us which questions we will be asked on the Day of Judgement. If we refuse to take the answers from the textbook and the teacher, then how should we expect to pass? The examiner sets the criterion and the standards and we have to use these as our guide. Our Examiner has power over the entire universe and more, and He is Most Just, Most Loving and also Most Powerful in retribution.
