Hadith Explanation
Don't Sit on the Roadside
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Don’t sit and wait on the roadside; and if you must, then protect your eyes from looking at the non-Mahram passing by.” [Muslim]
Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) doesn’t like us to while our time away. We are in the middle of an exam as long as we are alive, trying to qualify for higher and higher levels of Jannah. Then how can we just sit around and waste time?
If one must sit on the roadside to wait for somebody, sell their wares, or any other reason, they must be mindful of guarding their gaze from falling on non-Mahrams. A non-Mahram is anyone with whom marriage is permissible.
Either control your eyes and don’t look at passers-by, or stay home!
