Hadith Explanation

Euphrates Reveals Gold

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The time is near when the River Euphrates will uncover a treasure of gold. Whosoever may be alive at that time, should not take anything of it.” Another narration states: “The Hour will not come to pass before the River Euphrates dries up to unveil a mountain of gold, for which people will fight. Ninety-nine out of one hundred will die (in the fighting) and every man amongst them will say: ‘Perhaps I may be the only one to remain alive (and thus possess the gold).’” [Sahih Muslim]

The word "Yahsir" means unveil or uncover, i.e., gold will be discovered at its bottom when Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) would like it to do so. This will surely take place before the Day of Judgement. The first hadith tells us that we should not try to take anything from this gold. The second hadith explains why. This is because 99 of the 100 people going to take some will be killed, while their greed will be telling them that they will come out alive and it is other people who will die. When this incident takes place, only those will remain safe who are free from worldly greed and do not try to get any of this gold.

Prophecies in ahadith are meant to warn and guide the Muslim Ummah, to make it keen to preserve its religion and be conscious of the schemes of its enemies. To see prophecies come true should not produce laziness or depression; “The world is coming to an end so why bother” kind of attitude. The world was always meant to come to an end. What matters is what you do in the life that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) gave you to earn His pleasure. Through out life, a Muslim must work hard to do good and avoid evil solely for the pleasure of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “If the Hour (Day of Judgement) comes while one of you holds a palm seedling in his hand and he can cultivate it, he should do so.”
