Hadith Explanation

Exam Paper: The Husband

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah to admit a man into her house whose visit is disapproved by her husband, or that she should go out of the house against her husband’s will, or that she should obey the will of someone else in opposition to her husband’s wishes.” [Al-Targhib-o-Al-Tarhib]

When a man and woman would get married, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would pray to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) to unite husband and wife in doing good. This life, all of it, till the last breath, is nothing but an exam. Those who pass enter Jannah to live there for eternity. Therefore, the Muslim does not enter marriage with a will to fight, but with the desire to earn Allah’s pleasure through it. For the Muslim, life is not one of “rights” but one of responsibilities, because that is what we will have to answer to Allah for.

For a woman, her husband is one of the major exam papers she has to pass to graduate to Jannah. Other papers for her would be her children, her parents, etc. One of the questions on this exam paper of hers is to obey her husband when he does not ask of her anything that goes against Allah’s commands. She should watch and be mindful of the indications of his approval and disapproval. She should not follow the counsel of others which is in opposition to the will of her husband.
