Hadith Explanation

How to Send Blessings on the Prophet

A Sahabi asked the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam): “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has commanded us to ask blessings on you but how should we invoke blessings on you?” The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) kept silent. The Sahabah were much perturbed over his silence and wished that he had not asked him this question. Finally, the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Say, ‘O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibraheem and the family of Ibraheem. O Allah, give baraka to Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You gave baraka to Ibraheem and the family of Ibraheem. Surely You are worthy of Praise and Glorious,’ and then give the tasleem as you have learnt.” [Muslim; Kitab as-Salat]

The Sahabah (radi Allahu anhum) were concerned about right actions. They desired to fulfill Allah’s commands properly because of which if they didn’t understand how to do something they asked the Prophet (sal allahu alaihi wa sallam). On his (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) silence they became afraid of having asked an inappropriate question. However, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was being guided by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) as to the reply, and when it had been conveyed to him, he conveyed it to the Sahabah (radi Allahu anhum).

Use this same Durood (in Arabic) to send blessings on the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) any time and any place.
